Sustainability reporting is the involvement of management and employees in setting sustainability goals for the corporation. It involves collecting and integrating data related to environmental, economic and social characteristics into a balanced report.
My project focused on designing an application for regional and central leads of companies that are already creating sustainability reports. Initially, I focused on research to understand the current processes of sustainability, different roles of people involved and their requirements. I was interested in designing a product that made their task easier and simpler.
The design methodology involved research, interviews with central and regional leads, user surveys, analysis, designing and testing. I studied various frameworks: SHE Groups (Safety, Health and Environment); GRI guidelines; The Dow Jones Sustainability Index as well as Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). I then analyzed workflows, conducted analysis on data consolidation and engaged in exercises on mapping survey workflows, flow diagrams and scoping levels. I also studied sign-off processes and reporting structures.
The synthesis of my research helped me arrive at design directions for a sustainability reporting tool. I prototyped and tested eco-conversion screens for the regional leads and central leads. I also designed a concept for the rules editor for validating KPIs.
My industry experience has been enriching both in terms of design and in terms of professional aspects of managing relationships and team-work. Experiencing the final product take shape in front of my eyes from its inception has been immensely satisfying. I have acquired tremendous exposure to issues of responsible corporate citizenship. |
