I worked with Avani, an NGO in Uttaranchal . Their mission has been to make technology and livelihoods an integral part of living in these beautiful mountain ranges.
I conducted a detailed study of the region before identifying my area of work in the traditional craft of the Shauka community – Thulma and Chutka – the blankets made out of Tibetan sheep wool, which is indigenous to Uttarachchal.
My focus was on conceptualizing designs that could be both simple and production friendly so that the weavers could reproduce the design for future orders. I conducted market studies of the present scenario and probable clients. The outcome of my project was a range of throws, cushions and rugs in three collections – Collection Cerulean, Collection Salt and Pepper and Collection Fawn.
While working with the weavers, there was always an interaction with them on a personal level, and knowing the issues that they dealt with and the hardships in their lives. This aspect enhanced my own personality be it through building relationships at work and carrying it beyond work, or blending it into their lifestyle, understanding their views and seeing through their eyes. My endeavor was also to get them excited about their craft.
The responsibility of handling this project included exploring local skill sets like natural dyeing and spinning of wool, other available tools and infrastructure; finding, studying and analyzing a market.
I have matured as a designer by acquiring a holistic of an entire process. The most rewarding aspect was that I was generating employment for artisans in the hills. |
