My project related to developing handmade products by combining different craft techniques to to diversify my sponsor’s product range, thereby keeping clients interested through innovation.
I was intrigued at the concept of working with waste and tried to employ it wherever possible to make it simple and affordable with an eye for the local market. I also worked with lighting, streamers, decorations etc.
For my first collection, I designed a collection of journals for Neue Gallerie, a museum in New York. The work was inspired by the paintings of Gustav Klimt, an Austrian symbolist painter. I used techniques such as foiling, embossing, die-cut, weaving and gilding to best represent his paintings using fabric and paper. Subsequently, I also designed a few bookmarks and headbands to complement the journals based on knotting and bead work.
The second set of journals and cards was inspired by Tangrams, which are popular puzzles created in ancient China based on the shapes of triangles and quadrilaterals which can all be cut into a large square. All the colors were chirpy and youthful.
The third collection was based on the Japanese art of Origami. I designed two dimensional objects, modular objects, tessellations such as screens and lamps and several decoration.
I am thrilled with the creative freedom that I had to experiment. This project allowed me to see the development of the process from start to finish – right from the conceptualization stage to the display of the products at the store. I also had the immense satisfaction of seeing my products being appreciated by clients. |
