For my project, I worked on two assignments for the ‘Manish Arora’ label, a high-end fashion line, with internationally renowned Indian designer Manish Arora. He is adored for his kitschy, flamboyant designs, unconventional style and bold expression.
The theme of my first collection was 'Pop Art in Indian Style'. The two key inspirations were the two well known faces of the Pop Art Movement, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Next, I selected visuals of objects that would represent India in international markets. These included images of classical dancers, the National flower, birds, first Indian car, folk art, Indian kitsch, print art and packaging. The designs display use of unconventional elements, like using vinyl in embroidery, making brocades of Ambassador car design and images of Indian classical dancers in embroidery.
The second assignment involved developing a collection of saris for the domestic market. I invested some time in researching Manish’s stores, the market and customers as well as the work of other designers. My inspiration was a collage of images of Indian folk lore and tribes, streets and architecture. Manish Arora Indian wear is very loud and flashy. Bright colors and bold motifs reflect the loud street culture of India but the clothes are very well crafted and finished.
It was a new experience to retain the essence of my ideas and at the same time match Manish Arora’s design aesthetics and the brand identity. My collections are a blend of both of our ideas. Manish’s motto “Nothing is Impossible” has infused optimism in my design approach. |
