I completed my project at Eucalyptus, a relatively new home furnishing store in Hyderabad.
My project undertaken at Satya Creations, their other brand which has been in existence for a decade now, initially aimed at developing a range of block printed Kota sarees which were contemporary and different from their regular work.
The project allowed me to explore and extend the existing skill at workshops to widen the possibilities of design development within the framework of its infrastructure. This was a very hands-on experience. Initial tie and dye sampling led to the identification of the technique of just folding and dyeing. The outcome of this exercise was the introduction of new stoles in the store.
Next, I used existing blocks to develop surfaces. Here I endeavored to provide the craftsmen exposure to to a new repertoire of design with already existing blocks and a new directory of colorways. Color for this collection of stoles and sarees in Kota Doria was inspired by nature-based elements. The color combinations of the collections are black and white; blue and green, pink and orange; blue and violet; and yellow and green.
After this, Mangalgiri fabrics were first block printed and then value added with Lambani embroidery for blouse pieces.
Finally, I developed a design which could be used for both home furnishing textiles and apparels. This resulted in a bed-spread collection ‘Kachnar’ keeping in mind the market, customer and the store’s brand image.
This design journey has been as rich and colorful as the tapestry of colors and fabrics that I experimented with. |
