My diploma film tried to give voice to Khotachiwadi. Is a wadi just a conglomeration of galis (lanes) and buildings or does it have something more to it? The call of a fisherwoman, the couple that fell in love across balconies, the chapel with its neon cross and the house next to it where someone strums a guitar while the beer warms with droplets of condensation and dusk becomes night. My film explored the definitions of what can be defined as a wadi. The structure of my film imitated the way people interact in the wadi. I chose to work on the HDV format. The shoot was finished within 5 days by shooting double shifts each day. I edited the film using Adobe Premiere CS4 on a Windows 7 platform. One unified music theme was composed for the entire film which has a very Maharashtrian wadi flavour, sometimes modified to give it a Catholic feel.
Working in a city like Mumbai where film-making is an extraordinarily large, well-oiled business, I learnt about machinery, deadlines, timeline and how a thorough pre-production and a good crew are invaluable. Navigating a big city work-culture is an acquired skill. It comes hand in hand with respect for deadlines and superb crisis management capabilities. |
