For my diploma project I decided to work on a "slice of life” genre to portray a trivial yet interesting part of life. I adapted a short story called "The Storyteller" by Jhanvi Acharekar. Twenty-eight year old Ravi talked about his story of success, describing in vivid detail his journey from the slums to the high rise. He described the lies he told as a child to his friends and teachers about his parents and the false accounts of his life which he fed to the journalists who came to interview him since he was one of the youngest most successful businessmen in the country.
I wanted to keep the feel of the film as real as possible. Hence, this is also evident in the camera language which is hand held. It felt as if someone is witnessing the events rather than fabricating from memory. The locations of the film consisted mostly of the actual existing places. It took around two weeks, visiting places all over the city, before we could finally settle on to the ones shown in the film. The sound of the film, mainly the dubbing and cleaning, levelling and creating other extra sounds took most of the time. Though it is not a perfect film, but I have learnt a lot from making this film. Execution wise, I must learn how not to compromise and work with greater discipline. I am amazed at what can be done through pure dedication put in by a group of people. And that is a great learning indeed. |
