My diploma project is an animation film about a king and queen who are always eating. All the people in this country are like slaves who cook food for the King and Queen. Day by day, the rulers get fatter. One day the fat Queen rolls down from the throne and dies. After that tragic incident the King orders to make a statue of the Queen. The Cruel king makes his people work restlessly under the burning sun. Hard work makes them weak. They die one by one but the statue is made. This film tries to communicate that the world doesn’t change. A small minority always rules over the majority. The film concludes by stating that ‘hunger’ is the only thing that the majority ends up getting.
The idea of this story had already started developing in my mind while working on my classroom project. I made three storyboard drafts after finalizing my script. My backgrounds were inspired by the paintings and prints of Albrecht Durer. I decided not use colours except for two elements, the blue blood and to give depth and volume to the objects. I used a sepia (brownish) tone, which also went well with the story. As a medium, I used hand drawn 2D animated characters on backgrounds using Adobe Photoshop. Since Animation is an art form, it has a moral responsibility too. We should think seriously before wasting resources like paper, ink, electricity etc on animation sitting in air conditioned room. |
