‘Qassar’ is a 7 minute animation film about celebrating ordinariness. The protagonist is an old man who is an animator by profession. He never gave importance to his physical appearance. His wife, an old lady, always wanted her husband to be well-built. The film revolves around a few gags juxtaposed with the anxieties of the two characters. A lamp on the old man's desk, acts as a witness of the interaction between the two. This was initially a classroom project later converted into a diploma project. The objective was to demonstrate my understanding of story-telling and film-making through the medium of animation.
Pre-production consisted of writing the script, making the storyboard and shot breakdowns. This was followed by designing the characters and backgrounds. The animation was done using the traditional hand-drawn method. I watched a few reference videos from YouTube to understand certain actions.
The initial treatment given to the film was in ink strokes which were later on changed to a coloured 2D effect. The finished animation drawings were coloured in Flash and composited in After Effects. The final edit was done in Final cut Pro and a few scratch sounds were also added.
This project gave me the opportunity to execute my own idea within my own time frame and overcome the problems that one has to face in the process of making the animation film. I also learnt what helps in making a film and what does not. This film helped me overcome the mistakes made in previous projects and also taught me to use the resources optimally. |
