There is a lot of information around us which we filter as per their relevance and capture them as per our convenience. Still there are situations when we fail to capture information that we might need at a later date. For example we forget our friend’s phone number, last date of the delivery of assignment, author’s name or the latest music artist. Automated capture and access to captured information is the essence of my diploma project. This device is meant to relieve one of the worry to capture specific details for reference or use later on.
My diploma project looked at our everyday life in the context of memories and the need to record these for later use. It specially focussed on our need to access information. It looked at the use of mobile devices to record memorable special events, vacations, visits, get-togethers etc. Providing easy access to relevant digital information was of utmost priority.
A field study was conducted amongst the network of family and friends so as to observe and understand the activities related to information more closely. This study involved photo-elicitation, shadowing to find out “information capture opportunities” and goals. Going further a number of concepts were proposed in the area of ubiquitous computing where instead of viewing and manipulating computerized world through a large stationary computer and display, there is a shift to a new model in which we carry a very small mobile computer that acts as a personal display on information spaces. These displays are aware of their surroundings and change depending on the situation in which they are immersed. |
