IIJS Signature Goa is one of the landmark events showcased by the Indian jewellery industry. First launched to good acclaim in 2008, the event is the brainchild of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC). The quality and workmanship of Indian jewellery is renowned the world over. My diploma project focused upon designing table clusters for the outdoor cafeteria space along with sunshades/canopies for effective sun blocking. The design took inspiration from the show’s theme; namely, ‘Celebrating Goa’ and was formally based on maritime life. Deriving its workings from the principles of tensile structures, the canopy was a fully knock down fixture. The structural members were MS hollow pipes while the canopy itself was of double twill canvas, which also served as a tension member. Even though the structure held itself with the tension in the fabric, safety locks were put in the main members to ensure the stability of structures throughout the show. The design was very well received by both the organisers and the users of the show and was appreciated for its novel nature as well as functionality.
