The objective of my diploma project was to design a strategic roadmap for Dovetail Furniture Private Ltd., a furniture manufacturing company based in Bengaluru. It involved drawing for their design store which is a retail outlet selling standard furniture products and accessories for homes. The project addressed the existing gaps in the company’s offers to its customers and internal processes adapted to optimize resources. The design audit research was conducted by fragmenting of the comprehensive business elements into various components and analyzing them to see the unseen bottlenecks.
The first phase involved intensive research to understand the trends in furniture design, product and services offered, retail structure and user behaviour and existing competition to provide a platform guiding and evolving design directions. Identifying customers’ needs and streamlining the value added services that the company should provide to its customers were the focus areas.
The second phase involved internal design audit. It concerned complete design and production processes and system’s mapping to identify the business components, internal dependence and factors affecting it. Company’s strengths and weaknesses were identified to find out the core issues for suggesting an efficient and effectively tailored production process. Outlining strategies for the design store and its production unit for it to become an “Ideal Store” was the objective to be achieved by means of the Product and Process audit within the timeline of 5 months. The outcome was a set of findings and suggestions on internal and external state of the company with an appropriate feedback mechanism to achieve future goals. |
