My diploma project brief was to design a scooter for the school and college going male
students in age group 16 to 18 years and mainly for the metro cities of India. It had
to have 10 hp engine with 90 cc capacity and pickup 0 to 60 km. At the first stage,
I started collecting information from sources like magazines, encyclopedia, internet,
etc. to gather as much information as possible about scooters, its current trends and
models available. I also did an assignment of scooter-fusion to get familiarized with the
forms and key points in the design and styling of a scooter. As the next step, I studied
the automobile industry and the two-wheeler market in India. In order to design a
scooter, knowing the customers, the surrounding environment, and the vicinity of the
target users were necessary. Because of the time constraint, my research was lim¬ited
to Bangalore city only. I prepared a questionnaire and carried out user survey in two
phases to know details of the youngsters (boys) in the age group of 16-18 years. I
visited schools, colleges and playgrounds etc., and spent time to know the needs and
lifestyles of the target customers, everything from their tastes, to choices, to role
models, inspirations, dreams, limitations, environment and background among others.
Based on these studies, I developed theme board which followed conceptualization,
explorations and styling, design detailing and finalization of the concept. Through this
project I developed a sense of discipline in work and learnt to take criticism in a positive
way and incorporate them in the design. |
