The objective of the project was to develop interesting fabric surfaces for the client, using existing skills available in the organization, adding on new techniques and finally using them in the form of a collection, which would include garments and drapes.
The client for the diploma project was the renowned designer Anuradha Vakil, known for her use of Indian textiles and for her intricate detailing. The initial project brief gave me the choice of picking up a few techniques or craft skills out of the existing techniques and using them in combination with one another. But, later, when the client and I actually sat down and discussed each of the craft techniques used by her at the workshop, we realized that the vast geographical distance would not allow a well-coordinated collection to be created in a limited time frame.
We redefined the project brief, which involved the use of tailoring skill and the sewing machine to develop surfaces and textures and combine it with hand skills. The project brief also included sampling and prototyping, which helped me understand the differences and challenges faced while going from sampling to production and coordinating different people and units.
The outcome was an exhaustive directory of new ideas of surfaces treated with machine stitch resist, adorned with machine as well as hand embellishment. Some concepts were taken further and developed into final ranges of garments and drapes, that comprised a classy and at the same time a contemporary look, retaining my client’s image and line of work.
The project has led to immense learning. The creative process which was applied during the diploma project proved to be fruitful in terms of converting the paper concepts into market feasible products.
