This diploma project is an attempt to look at the issue of redesigning critically and with multiple perspectives. The project aims to frame the road map for the revitalization of the showcase design with both design inputs and strategic recommendations to achieve its original objectives.
The world has recognized design as a key discipline in making a positive change in people’s lives. Sadly, in India, design culture is yet to take centre stage. Keeping this in mind, the showcase design was started in 2001 as a joint collaboration between National Institute of Design and India Trade Promotions Organization, as a permanent design exhibition. It envisioned promoting Indian design by showcasing good design examples.
This diploma project was a unique opportunity for me to revitalize this set up through specific design and strategic inputs. During the contextual and background studies, I came across a number of issues that needed intervention. But, as a student of graphic design, my approach was specific to developing a communication design framework that would be a part of the larger revitalization process. This framework included developing a new brand ‘Indesh’ for the ailing showcase design. Subsequently, a web platform and a few brand elements were developed as models for design developments. In the project, I also developed the visual design guidelines for the brand to be percolated seamlessly in future.
This project was a great learning experience for me, and I realized the multiple roles a designer plays in a given context. I went beyond the preconceived notions of stereotypical design activities. In fact, I played the greater role of a key strategist in building a cohesive and apt brand for the showcase.
