The story depicts the innocent relationship of a grandfather with his grandson. It talks about both reality and fantasy, dealing with the concept of “parallel universes” or “multi universes.” Multi universes have been hypothesized in cosmology, physics, astronomy, philosophy, theology and fiction.
The term “multi universe” was coined by American psychologist and philosopher, William James. Fantasy has long borrowed the idea of an alternate universe from myth, legend and religion. Modern fantasy often presents the concept as a series of planes of existence where the laws of nature differ, allowing magical phenomena of some sort on some planes. The concept was also found in ancient Hindu mythology, in texts such as the Puranas and the Panchatantra.
Since the story of my animation film was based on my own childhood memories of my grandfather, I tried to deal very delicately with the relationship of a grandfather and a grandson and the emotions portrayed. The concept sprang from my grandfather planting the seed of imagination in my mind and making me open and self-confident by narrating a fantasy tale, replete with folktale characters. He is the narrator who puts life into the story, so there can be both a moral and psychological scope to the work, as well as entertainment value, depending upon the nature of the teller, the style of the telling, the age of the viewer and the overall context of the performance.
I was born and brought up in the city of Kolkata, so my story is located in Bengal, which is clearly visible from the kind of buildings, construction, interior of the rooms, furniture, river Hoogly, Howrah Bridge, etc. used in the film. When put together, they make for a significant and meaningful way of communicating the overall feeling of the time, place and situation of the story.
