I designed a new line of home products for Quetzal Design India that was to be sold under their own brand name. The client’s brief included several points that needed to be taken into consideration.
The client required me to design a multi functional product and not just a piece of furniture, on the basis of different body postures, activities, and user study. It needed a contemporary range of furniture which could create an environment in the given space. It wanted me to design furniture pieces for different occasions and to offer a range of furniture suitable for all occasions.
My initial survey gave me an idea about what the products available in the market were, and the prevalent leading brands in Bengaluru. It made me understand different users in the market, how they felt and what their requirements in furniture were.
My survey paved my way for the designing of dining room furniture. I had to design the entire set of dining room furniture including dining table, dining chair, and side board. Based on the needs of the people, and a prolonged brainstorming, I decided to take up a few words that became trigger points for my design. From those collected words, I took up a theme and a metaphor. The attributes of the metaphor gave me product ideas and a study of all those attributes helped me sketch the concept idea.
During my diploma project, I learnt that we should follow the design process. Understanding the users and their design requirements in order to give them a perfect solution was the ultimate aim of my diploma project. As Charles Eames quotes, “Design depends largely on constraints.”
