The project brief was to provide value addition to the existing Shoe Mart store in Alcala, Spain, and change it to a self-service format, as per the requirement of the client to save space.
There has been a transformation in our society with people starting to prefer the ‘do-it-yourself’ way, whether it’s just kiosks or something like a self-service store. A new generation that prefers self-service over actually dealing with a person is on the rise.
In the earlier format of the store, shoes and accessories were displayed along the wall and nowhere near the shoe display. Also, many on-floor staff was engaged in assisting the customers. This resulted in a sheer waste of time and space. I realized that if the shoes or accessories were stacked in boxes according to colours, sizes, etc. at the same place in a unique way, customers could easily access them without the help of a store-representative and it would also serve the dual purpose of display and space utilization.
With consumers becoming more and more technology savvy, I felt that the use of a digital information display system like kiosks would add a high level of convenience to their shopping experience. Since digital signage is all about sound, sight and motion, in short, a very dynamic medium, it gets people’s attention and helps retailers serve them better. A digital information kiosk was introduced in the store, accordingly, to educate clients about the products when active and to make customers aware of new offers when in a passive mode.
Understanding the importance of digital experience in a retail format, I have come to a greater knowledge and understanding of what self-service interactive kiosks are, and of the tremendous opportunities they bring to the world of retail.
