My project concentrated on research and design for student classroom behaviour. The aim was to understand behaviour change patterns among school children to ensure and enhance better training and sustained learning response. These behavioural patterns vary in nature, intensity and context among children and play a crucial role in terms of their learning and engagements in class. The classroom as an environment dedicated primarily to learning activities, requires behavioural habits and aptitude among students for optimal learning.
The project research to understand the various student behavioural patterns was done at Modern English Medium School, Nigdi, Pune. Students in the school come from relatively lower economic backgrounds. They face various constraints relating to socio-cultural influences, economic situation, relatively poor academic performance and available facilities. The school administration aimed at creating an environment to enhance the academic progress of the students.
I studied in detail the distractive behaviour of students with the help of user research, domain experts and literature review. The analysis and synthesis of the inter-relations of the several distractive behaviours of the students helped me arrive at various design directions and ultimately, a training aid for children. The causes and solutions for student behaviour required the need to enhance their ability for expression of learning.
Visionary, the visual aid to creative writing was designed and developed in two media - print and software. A card based training kit and a software application emphasized the visual learning of students to represent their thoughts and imagination with effective writing skills.
The design solution in the form of a training module and tangible device will be able to reflect the benefits of altered behaviour.
