This project dealt with borosilicate tubes, a type of glass that possesses the unique properties of transparency, chemical resistivity and resistance to thermal shock. The brief for this project was to come up with a range of tumblers and storage containers for an existing target audience.

Currently, the company’s entire production process deals with manufacturing techniques that cater to products made out of tubes. I studied the production set-up and proposed significant changes for the existing tumbler design. Since changes in the manufacturing technique were not feasible, an emphasis was placed on form development and adding value to the existing design by surface ornamentation. Techniques of surface cutting and sand blasting were used to add a new dimension to the drinkware range.

The category of storage containers was new to the catalogue. Research was conducted to find the target audience for the product. The concept was developed in two areas: First, where the material usage is justified and second, where the material gives the feel of its presence. Forms were developed in both areas and analyzed as models. The concept related to the dining area was selected and the form was selected based on its durability, production, marketing value and user sensibility.

The company’s existing range of the product is known for its functionality and simplicity. In my design intervention, I followed the same language to keep the essence of the product same for the user.
