Waste management
I have always loved printing. However, during my course at NID, I did not get much opportunity to explore block prints and also had minimal experience with traditional motifs. My project’s brief was to conduct a research study on Ajrakh and develop a print collection for home furnishings and garments. I also had to do a waste management project, where I had to make a range of products using all varieties of fabric waste.

For the first part of the project, I did some homework on block- printing. Block-printing is a difficult craft to sustain in a world of large and fast-moving orders, with very low margins for the craftspeople. After experiencing the process first-hand and understanding the language of form and technique, I turned to the Islamic architecture of Rani no Haziro and Badshah ka Darga in Ahmedabad for inspiration. Some of the forms found in the jaalis there are extremely original and modern. My designs for garments and home furnishings inspired by the jaalis are in keeping with the form, structure and geometry of traditional Ajrakh designs.

For the second part of the project, I had to study all the stages of production to understand waste generation. Waste fabrics are discarded according to their sizes; the smallest pieces being thrown away or burnt. I used this material to create a range of accessories for women and children. The production of this line was simple, without the tedious stages of print and colour selection.

I learnt a lot by working in a large enterprise which deals with products for both domestic consumption and exports.
