UX Design for iPhone version of BDS Workstation

The broker dealer workstation is a flagship product of J.P. Morgan’s Broker Dealer Services (BDS). It allows brokers, portfolio managers and other investment professionals to manage accounts, place trades, review the markets, etc. Today, it is accessible only via the internet. My diploma project was to provide a potential User Experience (UX) Design for an iPhone version of this platform, to add portability to the present offerings.

Gaining an insight into the assimilation of the platform (the BDS workstation) and its usage through user research led to domain and user understanding. After acquiring a basic understanding of the business, task analysis of the major groups was conducted. For the ease of handling and taking into consideration the limited time frame, a user-group was then shortlisted.

Various functionalities available in the web-version of the platform were also shortlisted to suit the mobile device. A detailed study was conducted on the UI guidelines of the iPhone and emphasis was applied to make the application suitable to it. Various low fidelity prototypes were made to put across the concepts for discussion. Finalized wireframes were translated into mock-ups in later stages of the project. Comments from experts on the respective domains played an important role in understanding the business and application platform in the limited time. Constant feedback from the stakeholders was also a key element in this project. The whole process was extensively iterative and finally a clickable prototype was made.

This project has helped me get a better understanding of business in a corporate environment. It also sharpened my ability to manage my time efficiently and work within a dislocated environment, where my mentor, users and I were in different locations.
