My project brief was to design four collections of home furnishings and accessories. The first project was to design and develop fabrics for home furnishings using embroidery and surface ornamentation techniques for the MoOD Fair in Brussels, Belgium. This season, the focus was on traditional textiles.

After conducting the initial research, I decided to take a re-look at traditional African and Asian textiles with a contemporary twist. These intricate, colourful patterns are the latest in the trend of ethnic home furnishings. The theme “Embellishing Traditions” for the MoOD Fair was represented by the colour palette and inspired the development of the surface concepts.

The second project was to design a range of kitchen towels for Crate & Barrel. The third was a range of cushions and kitchen products for the Israeli client, Golf & Co. and the final project was another collection of cushions and kitchen products for the European buyer, Cost Plus. Each project required a study of the particular client, the market and the trends in colour and surface within the industry. A good understanding of how markets function as well as balancing the possibilities and constraints provided by the sponsor company was an important aspect of the whole project.

During this diploma project, my learning process became tangible and I used the opportunity to apply it to the industry. Through this experience, I have learned how to coordinate with a crew and handle multiple projects within the given constraints.
