My diploma film documents the architectural paradise of Ahmedabad, capturing the unique plan of the old city with its traditional wooden houses and beautiful gates known as pols and focusing on the people who live in these houses.
Ahmedabad is known for its rich history, culture and architecture. Founded in 1411, the city boasts of some of the finest monuments and temples that are known for their ornate woodwork. The main regions in India, where woodwork still survives in appreciable quantities, are the Himalayan region, parts of south India and Gujarat. In Gujarat, the woodwork is outstanding in terms of both quality and quantity. Some of the wooden architecture in Ahmedabad is as old as 300 years! However, many of these carvings have been plundered by antique dealers and the old buildings are being torn down to make way for new houses.
The 600-year-old city of Ahmedabad is expected to acquire the World Heritage City tag soon. This film provides documentation on Ahmedabad’s architecture that may be further used for its restoration and preservation. It also inspires citizens to save their heritage by using new methods of preservation such as those used for the restoration of Mangaldas Ni Haveli.
The film aims to create awareness among people who live in and around such houses and inspires them to stand up and take action to prevent them from disappearing. |
