Protidhhoni: A short Fiction Film

I consider myself a storyteller and this, along with my fascination for the supernatural, was a sure recipe for making an interesting horror film. When I was a child, my sister would tell me stories. One of these was Protidhhoni, a ghost story by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. It was this story that I wanted to adapt for the screen for my diploma film.

What do you do if someone you know well goes missing? In the film, Somnath Banerjee goes missing. Two concerned friends pay him a visit at the mansion he has inherited far away from the city. They find his reasons for isolation to be not entirely normal. They discover a supernatural presence in the house; one that does not welcome them.

For a Bengali, who has been brought up outside the state of West Bengal, the film was an attempt to return to my roots. Thus, the language of the film is Bengali. During the ten-day shoot in Birnagar and Nawadwip villages and Kolkata in West Bengal, we had many problems. Being “outsiders”, the crew got into trouble with the locals and was denied basic amenities. Luckily, I had relatives there who helped us out. After four months of editing and sound designing in Kolkata, the 52-minute film was ready. Lengthy it may be, but its pace allows it to sink into the audience’s psyche.

My objective was to tell a good story and to scare or at least make the viewer uneasy. It was a personal test for me to see whether I was capable of making horror films, for I wish to take this up in the future.
