Outdoor Kiosk for Coffee Day Express

The brief for my project was to design an outdoor kiosk for the established brand, Café Coffee Day. The company, which runs cafes and indoor kiosks all over India, wanted to install new outdoor kiosks. These kiosks were required to withstand weather conditions such as rain and wind and issues such as shoplifting. The knockdown kiosks had to be durable and comfortable for both customer and the kiosk boy.

The project started with my visits to various outdoor and indoor kiosks in Delhi and National Capital Region, where I studied them and observed the customer behaviour there. While designing the kiosk I had to keep in mind the kind of interaction between the kiosk boy and customer, the mindset of the customer and the material that would be used make the kiosk. It would have to be such that it could be dismantled and reinstalled easily while, at the same time, attract customers.

I designed a stand-alone kiosk that may be used to brand all unorganized retail in and around cities, for different merchandise. It can be put-up anywhere, is cheap, easy to build and durable. The stall can be set up at various locations such as shopping malls, supermarkets, multiplexes, corporate lounges, airports, railway stations, depots, petrol pumps, recreational parks, getaways and educational institutions.

Since I come from a textile background, understanding the technical detail of manufacturing process before stepping into the practical field of retail was very important. I had to keep in mind the technical limitations, ease in manufacturing and price factor while designing the kiosk. I now realize that design is about coming out with better solutions within existing limitations.
