The brief for my diploma project was to introduce new techniques for dyeing, printing and surface ornamentation along with the silhouettes for Tranoi SS’11 Men’s and Women’s Wear during the Paris Fashion Week and the Van Heusen Men’s Fashion Week SS11 in New Delhi. The project focused on the use of these techniques for an effective and innovative contemporary collection that kept with Cue’s brand image.
I picked ‘Travelogues’ as the theme for my project. It gave me the direction for the look of the collection as well as its colour and mood. My explorations in all the techniques were directed towards washed and worn-out surfaces: earthy, subtle colours.
Since dyeing was part of the company’s set-up, I got the opportunity to play with the medium with the help of their very skilled dyers. I spent a lot of time with the dyers and was able to achieve the desired dyeing effects and explore some new ones as well.
Unlike dyeing, printing was not a part of the company’s set up and required the identification of skills. I explored screen-printing as a medium to achieve the appropriate look and feel for the collection. I also combined various ornamentation techniques that were available to create surfaces for the garments. This work gave me ample freedom to explore and I feel greatly encouraged by this experience.
