Keywords Cooking system Induction cooking Modern appliance Steamer
For my diploma project, I developed a multi-cook system of non-stick cookware that works on steam. The project may ultimately result in a complete cooking range for induction cook-tops, most suited for working singles, couples as well as students who struggle for space and time. It makes it easy to cook and serve food and is more space-efficient, time-sensitive and versatile option for today’s home-chefs and their cooking needs.
The target users were between 20-35 years of age, who were multi-ethnic in outlook, aware of trends and had disposable incomes. I started the project with a thorough market analysis to map opportunities. This was followed by research into cooking techniques and utensils. The products that are currently available in the market and their drawbacks were analyzed.
I developed a number of concepts and compared them on the basis of usage, aesthetics and functions. The concept I selected was further refined by taking into consideration material and technological aspects. My final design is a single pan, a multi-cooker. While its primary function is that of a steamer/pressure-pot, it can also be used as a stock pot for frying, boiling and sautéing. The final deliverables included detailed technical and production drawings as well as 3D rendering of the concept.
The responsibility of handling a project on my own helped boost my confidence, competence, efficiency and tolerance and brought about better understanding of professional constraints such as time and cost factors. I learnt that one of the primary roles of a designer is to integrate the manufacturer’s capabilities with consumer expectations to create a marketable product.
