My project was to design a multi-purpose roof carrier which would both serve as a utility and would also be associated with activities such as trips and picnics. It had to go beyond being a weather-protected storage unit. The concept is interesting and relatively unexplored in India.
In India, many of the roof-top carriers on cars are just open ones made from bent rod/pipe wherein luggage is tied on top with a rope and covered with a tarpaulin during the rainy season.
My research process consisted studying VIP Industries Ltd. , their design innovations and existing product range. I studied both Indian and international roof carrier models. I next conducted user surveys to understand activities people engage in when they go for land, water and sea trips. My storyboard analyzed all the possible steps related to weekend trips, starting from choosing a destination to packing on the way back as well as what was being packed. I also analyzed different activities in which roof-carriers can be used.
My final design direction led to a closed-box product that can be taken off the carrier. It can also be used indoors for storage activities when the user is not engaging in outdoor activities. The carrier has a nice lightweight, aerodynamic form and a sporty look.
Through my project, I acquired an insight into issues of user psychology, identity and personality and understand how each bag/luggage says something about the owner through color, texture and form. As a product designer, it was very fulfilling to watch my creation become a reality. |
