My project was a subset of a larger social innovation project called ‘The Hometowns Project’, which has, since 2005, focused upon developing graphic products and internet based information on sites of significance in Melbourne, Australia. Working with schools and local communities, this project develops intelligence about specific sites, activities and communities.
The objective of my project, Project Locavore, was to enable consumers to become effective Locavores by providing them access to local produce.
I created a paper map/poster for Melbourne that will be used as posters in school and community areas. The Locavore map was based upon the experience of the Green map systems. Cartographic studies can be taken up as the further application for this map and can be incorporated for the future extension. Given that the project was field-work based, I had an opportunity to see a lot of the city of Melbourne and meet several people engaged in a wide range of sustainability projects.
In addition, I created a digital online Interactive map which is an online resource to enable people living in inner city Melbourne to buy responsibly. This means not buying big brands or processed foods.
The maps I created are actually in the process of being mass printed and distributed among the people of Melbourne and then into the next level translation into a webtop . I am looking forward to receiving news of positive changes due to my design intervention.
My experience has shaped me as a designer because I now have an orientation of social responsibility to integrate into my design thinking. |
