My project focused on redesigning the existing autorickshaw for city commuting by introducing a new styling language and improving both the overall aesthetic appeal and usability of the vehicle.

The key issues to be targeted through design solutions were seats getting wet due to heavy rains, inadequate luggage space, ease of entering especially for old people, better facilities for the driver’s seat, two headlights for better visibility, parking lights and trafficators.

I commenced my work with a detailed study of commuter issues and task analysis as well as observations and analysis of current exteriors and interiors in use. I incorporated considerations of applied ergonomic principles and anthropometric data for both the driver’s area and passenger considerations.

Design directions included a roomy feel by extending the windshield till the frontal roof area and also increasing visibility and introducing a new age character-striking color finish, information for passenger which include maps of the city and places and extra leg space for passengers. In addition, children’s safety through introducing better roll bars was another area of focus.

Ideation led to several exterior styling concepts which included a stretched eggy form, box carrier type, an egg-like compact dome, a dual loop system, a tight hemispherical concept, a boxy yet stylish and sleek exterior. I then worked on a final 3D model of the body work and sample prototypes of its renderings.

Given that the auto-rickshaw is a preferred mode of transport especially in urban and congested areas, I am pleased that I have made a contribution to urban transportation issues.
