My project initially was open ended. My sponsor provided me with three words– Health, Happiness and Prosperity. I had to resolve what these words mean to the Indian consumer and how home appliances can be designed around the meanings. The emphasis throughout was on ‘contextual innovation’ -ideas that are contextually sound and relevant for India. Finally, I decided to focus on microwave ovens for my project.
As part of my research, I visited Indian families, shops and kitchens in New Delhi and Ahmedabad to observe the minute yet extremely significant details in terms of how customers interact with microwaves, that are essential for a clear design vision and direction . I then designed two models.
Model 1 [NEO] is a microwave which reflects ‘voluntary simplicity’ and performs the basic function of reheating and defrosting in the easiest way possible. Model 2[FLUX] is a microwave oven which provides better cooking access to the user and is better aligned and suited to the Indian way of cooking.
In an industrial set-up, I learned how designers have to work collaboratively with engineering, product planning and marketing teams in order to make a successful product. I am now aware that good design does not exist in isolation. Its beauty lies in its relevance and how effortlessly it fits within a given context and scenario.
My emphasis in the future will always be centered around designing and delivering products that honor the culture, habits and lifestyle of the local people. |
