This project focused on designing and developing fabrics for table and kitchen linen collections which were to be exhibited at Ambiente 2013, a textile fair in Frankfurt, Germany. Tracon Export Service Pvt. Ltd. caters to the middle and upper middle segments of the market and exports its products to USA, UK, Germany, and Australia.
Five theme-based collections and coordinated cushions were made—all using printing, woven, and embroidery techniques. Three fabric collections were for curtains and upholstery, while two others were for table and kitchen linen. A thorough trend research was carried out and based on this, mood boards and colour stories were created. It was important to identify the latent needs and convert them into a product idea which would be readily accepted in the market.
The first and second themes for the collections were Blue Horizon and Water Lilies, where a combination of florals, geometry, textures, stripes, and checks was created. The third theme had ornamental forms. The table and kitchen linen collection for spring-summer was designed with a marine life and cityscape theme. Deciding the colour ways for all the designs was an interesting part of this project. The design journey began with research; this was followed by concept development. Finally, sampling and production was undertaken keeping in mind the capacity of the Karur branch of the company in Tamil Nadu. Sample development was a very vital part of the project.
This project taught a lot about the importance of teamwork, dealing with the clients, and the necessity of bringing in practicality in production and maintaining cost-effectiveness. |
