This project was divided into two sub projects with 88.6m motor yacht for Oceanco based on the naval architecture platform given and a 200m+80m (2) super yacht called, Albatross, for the global elite.
Research began by benchmarking the layout for the yacht; while designing, foremost importance was given to the aft as it added to the visual appeal of the yacht. After a lot of brainstorming and analysing, mood boards were made; gradually it was decided that a gigayacht inspired by the form of an albatross would be the final design. Based on the final GA (General Arrangements), changes were made to the earlier tentative forms, consistency and character of the form was refined; eventually, the final form was realised. Solar sails were included in the final design.
Vornoi diagrams were made and the most promising patterns emerging from these were incorporated in the final layout; designing the hull layout was a crucial process as that would greatly affect the form and spaces. Initial designs involved the 200m main ship, the two 80m motor yachts and two 20m dayboats. From a pentamaran layout with voids to house the boats, to creŽating a negative space to accommoŽdate them, different approaches were tried. It was crucial that the hierarchy of the yachts and their visual presence always remained intact. In the final design, care was taken at every step, to ensure that the layout and aesthetic parameters did not undermine safety, ergonomic issues, or sea faring abilities of the yacht.
The core processes and the extent of attention to detail adhered to in this project enriched knowledge about conventional yacht design. The final product created targeted international as well as region-specific clients; this project was a good opportunity to learn more about the yacht manufacturing inŽdustry. |
