Synopsis
This project focused on designing a chair using recycled fabric rope. The objective was to add new dimensions and flexibility to the product whilst working within the parameters of the client’s existing design philosophies and process, whilst promoting the local artisans by creating opportunities for sustainable growth and development.
The combining of design intervention and the skills of the local craftsmen led to weaving ethics, ethnicity and ecology into one final product. A contemporary chair form accompanied by a footstool added an entirely new posture possibility and a whole new level of comfort. Being space efficient and collapsible, the chair can also be hung on the wall to look like a colourful decorative panel when not in use.
