Design perspectives intermesh; occasionally they even fuse into one another, going on to form newer design idioms. This aspect is the hallmark of the students’ projects featured in this edition of Young Designers. As a true exemplar of multidisciplinary learning, the academic practices at the National Institute of Design (NID) continue to strive for renewed methods of knowledge creation. The graduates whose works have been featured in this publication, are going to be the torchbearers of the design practices and philosophies espoused by NID.

For these young graduates stepping into the world, an incredible journey has just begun. A cornucopia of opportunities awaits them, and each such opportunity is pregnant with possibility. I know that they will ‘Think Big’ in all the initiatives and decisions they make in their careers. I know that they will bring a keen sense of social responsibility to their design approach. I know that this will enable them to make a contribution and garner respect for their work and their profession.

The work of our young graduates from all the eighteen disciplines at NID has been captured in this publication. It reveals the commendable depth of thought that has gone into the materialisation of the design solutions they have presented.

The creative design talent of this year’s graduates has been showcased in this edition of Young Designers. On the occasion of the 34th Convocation, it is with great pride and pleasure that I dedicate this compendium to our young graduates. I wish them the very best as they leave our portals to embark on their professional journeys to make a name for themselves in the arena of design.

Director
National Institute of Design

With the passing of yet another academic year, the National Institute of Design (NID) has once again reinforced its position as India’s premier design education institute. As the roots of design education at the institute grow deeper, its students continue to aim higher, explore new realms of knowledge, and break new frontiers in the world of design. India has had a long-surviving tradition of sustainability; since time immemorial, she has integrated economic, political, social, environmental, spiritual, and educational domains in a successful manner. Today, as India ascends the ladder of economic and industrial prowess with her feet firmly planted in the ideals of sustainability and social innovation, and tradition and modernity, the world is looking towards our country for a new interpretation of inclusive growth.

This year’s academic endeavours at NID have focused on social innovation, and this has resulted in a commendable amalgamation of ecological design and sustainable technology, with due emphasis on inclusive growth.

The need of the hour is to harness the power of innovative thinking to make optimum use of diminishing resources, and the faculty and students at NID have been continuously striving to foster a culture of responsible design, drawing from the vocabulary of Indian culture, tradition, and heritage.

Regenerative Design Education

The range of subjects on which final year design students choose to work upon as part of their diploma projects, provides useful insights to design educators and the industry alike. The Young Designers publication provides glimpses of the nature and outcome of the projects undertaken by the students at NID. The first edition of Young Designers was released during the 12th convocation ceremony at the institute in 1990. Since then, this publication has steadily increased in volume as the number of professional education programmes at the institute has valuably risen. A large number of national and international organisations have been sponsoring the students’ projects; their continued support testifies to the value and service that our young designers have to offer.

Regeneration is a way of life at NID. Since 2010, faculty teams have charted out a major curriculum review exercise. Academic mechanisms are being recalibrated. With the revamping of the credit and evaluation system complementing it, the new curriculum structure is now in place.

Research in examining patterns and profiles across previous diploma projects is adding value to the existing academic practices. Such pedagogic indicators will contextualise the curriculum across all disciplines at the institute and appraisals of the upcoming batch of students will test the relevance of the new pedagogy.
Meanwhile, I congratulate my faculty colleagues who strive to nurture creativity in our students.

Over the years, teams of motivated faculty and staff have worked dedicatedly on the Young Designers publication – each team has thoughtfully innovated and experimented with the design of the publication in unique ways. This year’s team brings in fresh considerations to the format and structure of the publication. I appreciate the hard work put in by the entire team.

On the occasion of the 34th convocation, I felicitate the graduates of the Professional Education Programme and appreciate faculty colleagues for encouraging and supporting the young designers featured in this edition of the publication.
