Synopsis
Cities of yore were walled-in for protection to keep out invaders: the compound walls of today’s urban properties are a territorial demarcation of private ownership – does this imply that social interaction have become invasive? In the old walled cities of Ahmedabad and Surat, contrary to their newer more modern counter parts, public spaces overlap to merge into one big community playground. The hierarchy of public and private realm has changed drastically with the ‘invasion’ of the urban compound wall.
The objective of this project is to understand the intangible and tangible implications it has on human interactions. As it deals with space and space-defining elements, it was only befitting that these images were presented as a non-linear narrative by creating a sub-space within the exhibition space.
