Synopsis
The project involved working with handloom weavers to develop rugs and durries for the international market. The common thread that ran through the three collections designed for this project is the use of undyed mill-spun yarn in various counts and constructions.
The first of the three collections is based on plying yarn to create weathered surfaces for flat-woven durries woven on the pit-loom. The second collection references handcrafted geometric patterning seen on baskets and mud walls. A grid was used to map triangular and zigzag patterns that were woven in looped constructions on frame looms. The third collection, in natural whites, was based on the developing a new technique of juxtaposing yarns to create tone-on-tone patterning.
