Synopsis

Love transcends all barriers – as testimony to this proverb, this visual narrative focuses on the complex gender, love and community relationships within the Hijra community of Ahmedabad. The project covers only those who are initiated into the community and live a professional life of a Hijra.

On one hand, the community promises to transcend the hegemonic hereto-patriarchy and the compartmental gender roles that come with it, but at the same time fall in with the same in their own relationships. The images taken, sometimes mock the idea of normative roles of men and women within the frame. Sometimes, the images too fall into the trap of gender stereotypes. This is the constant dilemma experienced by the Hijra community that the photographs seek to represent.
