Synopsis
More than often due to lack of documentation, a family’s ancestral history is passed on by word of mouth and thereby heavily embellished, generating multiple, ambiguous interpretations of the truth.
This project traces back one such story. What mystery surrounded the death of six members of a single family unit who met their tragic fate in an infamous train collision? Was their death rigged? What did the inauspicious breaking of a henna bottle have to do with it? The final outcome, a book, is an attempt to tap into the potential of visual storytelling through photography. To pique the readers’ curiosity whilst maintaining the linearity of the photographic narrative, the book chronologically yet cryptically retraces the events through monochromic images and text.
