Technology plays a crucial and inseparable part in the human society. As digital technology continues to proliferate, it is changing the way we interact with the computer. The rise in need to support natural and efficient interaction techniques that are easy to learn and use, as computing becomes more pervasive, has opened the door for implementation of new interaction methodology.
This project was undertaken to explore the domain of Vision based Human-Computer Interaction, using webcam as an input device. A range of applications have been developed, highlighting the basis of this new interaction paradigm, based on motion detection. Each of these applications was conceived with the goal of exploring a new set of interaction style with each iteration.
Further I pondered to explore the domain of Human Gesture Recognition with the goal to interpret symbolic gesture (sign language). The main aim was to able to recognise hand gesture by the computer. This would enable to implement a vast range of command and diverse modes of control. Thereby an efficient interaction technique could be set up, whereby human could communicate with machine using natural hand gesture.
Using OpenCV, it was possible to create an application, which interprets specific gesture made by a human. This approach constitutes using a camera, for capturing live feed, and computer vision algorithms, to interpret sign language. Application able to recognise a few sign language has been successfully developed. This would enable to implement a vast range of command and diverse modes of control. Thereby an efficient and robust interaction technique could be set up, whereby human could communicate with machine using natural hand gesture.
