My project was about creating system base graphic templates for children’s bicycles and their POS (Point Sale) material which included designing posters and catalogues for the same. My project was an exercise of branding as it involved creating a visual grouping of the product by giving them a distinct identity. In this case it is not the symbol or the logo, but the product graphics used for a common visual language.
With the Indian bicycle industry distributing approximately 1.25 crore bicycles every year, it’s a complicated task to select “the one.” Everybody wants something different to complement their needs. Since children also are becoming brand conscious nowadays, childrens’ bicycles, as a segment, need to have a strong identity to differentiate itself from the rest.
My main objective in the project was to visualize and develop a format and visual system which would present different cycles in a particular segment as a stronger cohesive presence and also to
understand the target audience and make them acquainted with the products. I took up the project in order to experience how product graphics enhance the look of the product.
My project started with understanding the market of children’s bicycle industry, knowing competitors and understanding how they work. I realized that except the use of big logos and symbols, and blindly copying and distorting the graphics of foreign bicycles on Indian ones, there was not much done in terms of the surface graphics in the Indian bicycle industry.
The experience expanded my learning in new territories. I learnt many things which added to learning in NID, in terms of design process. It also gave me a chance to apply my learning to a project that was challenging and enriching at the same time.
