According to the brief given by Orient Ceramic, I had to work on surface designs of wall tiles, based on understanding production and its corresponding cost effectiveness. I started with a keen market study in order to gain a clear perspective of the user-buyer profile. Next, I systematically classified the acquired data to give an overview based on which the new range was developed.
Nowadays, ceramic tiles have become very popular. Previously, they were used only for kitchens and bathrooms and had a very basic and utilitarian look. Today, however, ceramic tiles have come a long way from being more than a utility item to a symbol of social status and in tune with fashion trends.
The objective of the project was to explore surface designs for tiles and to add more value by imparting better aesthetics and an individual touch to each product while keeping in mind the available facilities of the unit. The idea underlying designing surfaces was to create a new range of tiles with innovative textures and motifs, for the target market.
It was a challenging experience as I had to design a whole new look of textures and motifs for these tiles which had to be economical and also reflect the look and feel of the tiles designed for the elite class range. On the basis of the in-depth survey and my personal observation, I tried to break the monotony of border tiles through the surface decoration of the tiles and constantly brought about innovation in them through the play of textures, colours and patterns.
It was, overall, an eye opening experience, which I know will be definitely fruitful for my growth in my area of work. Handling an entire project made me more confident.
