Between the Arabian sea and the foothills of the Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka rests an ancient tribe known as the Halakki Vokalligas. Known to be the ‘Aboriginals of North Kanara district’. Their traditions and cultural heritage which once shone in glory is under threat by successive waves of modernization and urbanization. The film ‘Nugli and Tunes of Yore’ is an attempt to bring to light one aspect of their heritage that is nearing its death, which is the oral tradition of folk songs that has been passed down from generations.
