This project aimed at providing an infotainment system exclusive to Royal Enfield motorcycles. This would be an adaptive system which gave information and entertainment to the user by pairing a phone via Bluetooth. Infotainment can be defined as “information-based media content or programming that also includes entertainment content in an effort to enhance popularity with audiences and consumers”.

This project was about designing a system which could be attached to the entire motorcycle range, satisfying the basic need for which the term “infotainment” was coined. This system was to connect the motorcycle rider and the smart phone via Bluetooth. This would enable the user to access information and entertainment from the smart phone without any physical contact with the phone while riding. The human-machine interface was designed in a user-friendly manner so that the rider’s distraction is least and can have maximum functions with the aid of voice commands, single line display, and minimal controls.

This system would assist the touring riders as well as the regular motorcycle users. It would provide services that are frequently used by the rider such as GPS, call attend/reject, SMS, music, intercom, and radio according to priority so that the services do not interfere among themselves. The system essentially consists of three components: the display, the controls, and the grey matter for containing the phone.

Through this project, there was cross-utilisation of all design capabilities and limits; this project helped realise the importance of innovation in the design process.
