A good video game can function as a gateway through which students can explore a broader range of knowledge. The computer game industry is flourishing. New input modalities and game controllers open avenues for new ways of interaction and game dynamics involving new environments. However, the technology is given more prominence, much to the detriment of the player’s psychology. It is necessary to understand how the user perceives the input modality.

This project involved a participatory design process; children were central to the product design. School children aged 10–15 years were introduced to the conventional game input modalities such as Wii Balance Board and Dance Revolution Mat to study how they would like to use them and what kind of games they liked to play.

‘Crazy Action Fly’ is one of the mini games developed through the play-centric design process. In this game, the player controls an airplane to perform stunts such as loops and twists and collect as many rings as possible using the Dance Revolution Mat input modality. The player has to continuously step on different areas of the mat to control the plane. The main objective of the game is the synchronisation of the thoughts with the limb movement. Physical agility, quickness in movement, and physical stress are tested. Promptness and spatial awareness in children is improved too.

Game design is becoming an all inclusive field where technology, design, different subject areas, and research converge to give astounding user experiences. These games have the future potential to utilise the advanced technical innovations and make the learning experience richer and interesting for students.
