This project was about developing a technology demonstration motorcycle for India, showing product concepts of Visteon and 3M in lighting, electronics, power train, material and graphics available for 2014 model year application. College students formed the target group; hence, a sporty motorcycle that would incorporate the technology concepts by Visteon and 3M had to be designed.


The donor bike, over whose platform, the final working prototype was developed, was Hero Honda Glamour. The project involved complete conceptualisation of the motorcycle, from the sketch phase to the actual realisation of it in the form of a working prototype. Once a final design direction had been identified after discussions with the design teams in America, Germany, UK, and China, numerous ideas were generated. The design involved not only the design of specific parts such as the head light assembly, the tail light assembly, the instrument cluster, and the body panels, but also the careful selection of the colour and trim for the motorcycle, and the direction and basic storyboarding of a movie clip that would explain the motorcycle’s features to the audience.


Final prototyping involved the fabrication of the aforementioned parts at Dilip Chhabria
Design. Unlike conventional automotive prototyping methods such as clay modelling, the process involved direct sheet metal fabrication. It was indeed an enriching experience to be able to actually direct and work with modellers, albeit of a different kind as in the industry. The final surfacing was achieved with the help of automotive putty and painted over.


The vehicle made its world debut at the Shanghai Auto show 2011 and then made a nation-wide tour to all the major OEMs in India. The learning from this project was astounding in every sense.
