The twin forces of urbanization and migration have resulted in a dichotomy. Towns and cities offer a more favorable setting for the resolution of social and environmental problems, as compared to rural areas. Rural areas and urban slums lack the infrastructure of good governance. This scenario creates implications for safety and security.

Through my project, I proposed a broad framework for the design and development of safety and security and how a mobile environment can bridge and counter it.

I conducted a study of seven families in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, which reflected a diversity a range of circumstances. Using a combination of ethnographic studies, questionnaires and focus groups that centered on mapping fears, various dimensions of insecurity, comfort with technology, emergency preparedness, beliefs, technological acceptance and ecology from I emerged with rich data, I used three psychological approaches to guide my thinking and research approaches Expectancy-Value theory, Value Expectation mode and cognitive structure of emotions to map eight kinds of potential threats – terrorist, criminal, industrial, natural, technological, environmental, economic, and political.

The synthesis of this research provided new insights into the ways in which new products, protocols and mobile applications and how a mobile application can bridge and counter threats and enhance everyday life by providing a sense of safety and security. The key areas identified are information, technological acceptance and identity and services. My final concept based on "services with devices" model combined information, identity and technological acceptance. The concept has been forwarded in for a pilot test to get a response on the concept.
