The project aimed to enhance the Indian Navy's Combat Management System (CMS) by improving its communication module and maritime charts. The existing communication module had limitations in functionality, discoverability, and reliability, affecting collaboration among naval personnel. To address this, a new, seamlessly integrated communication module was developed with robust capabilities tailored to naval operations. Additionally, the maritime charts, though meeting international standards, had visual inconsistencies impacting situational awareness. The project refined these charts by optimising colour palettes, icons, and symbology for better usability. Extensive research, including comparative analysis, user interviews, and usability testing with naval officers, informed the design. Key outcomes include a conceptual framework for communication module with features like multi-modal interaction, and efficient information access, along with customised design guidelines for maritime charts. This project significantly enhances CMS usability, improving communication, collaboration, and decision-making, ultimately strengthening the Indian Navy’s operational effectiveness and maritime mission success.
