Design intervention in Thongjao pottery of Manipur
Ceramic & Glass DesignHandmade PotteryCraft RevivalContemporarySustainability
This project explores Thongjao, the largest pottery cluster in Manipur, which is struggling due to declining potter numbers and low profits. Similar to Sekmai and Andro pottery, Thongjao risks becoming a heritage site rather than a thriving craft hub. Inspired by the success of Longpi black pottery, the project investigates why Thongjao pottery has not gained the same contemporary appeal. The key challenge identified is the lack of design thinking and modern aesthetics, despite the potters’ ability to create high-quality handmade ceramics. To address this, the project involved collaborating with artisans to develop products that suit the contemporary market while preserving Thongjao’s cultural identity. This initiative aims to ensure the sustainability of the craft, enhance its market relevance, and help Thongjao potters secure better livelihoods.
